Kirsan Ilyumzhinov assumed office of the President
The inauguration of the President of the Republic of Kalmykia Kirsan Iliumzhinov took place in Elista on Saturday November 23, 2002. It was held at the broadened session of the People’s Khural (Parliament) of the Republic of Kalmykia.
Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has been re-elected the President of the Republic of Kalmykia. For the third time he has had honour to swear alligiance to the people of the Republic of Kalmykia. The head of Kalmykia promised to protect the interests of the people of Kalmykia, to respect and to guard the human rights and liberties, to follow the Constitution of the Russian Federation and the Steppe Code (Fundamental law) of the Republic of Kalmykia.
The priests of three main religions – Buddhism, Orthodoxy and Islam – offered up a prayer, the Bishop of Kalmykia and Elista announced the salutatory address of the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Alexii II. After the applauses calmed down, the official persons congratulated the President.
The Deputy Plenipotentiary of the President of the Russian Federation in the South Federal District Nikolai Sleptsov read out the greeting address of the head of the state Vladimir Putin and conveyed greetings of the Plenipotentiary of the President of the Russian Federation in the South Federal District Victor Kazantsev.
The governors of Astrakhan and Volgograd regions Anatoly Guzhvin and Nikolai Maksiuta, the 13 World Chess Champion Garry Kasparov, the deputies of the State Duma, the representatives of regions of the South Federal District participated in the ceremony of the inauguration.
It was emphasized that the majority of the people of Kalmykia voted for stability and confidence in the future development of the steppe republic.
