As many respected scholars of Oriental studies suppose – Kalmykia is the second birthplace of fairy tales after India. And for good reasons.

We have many stories of different genres: heroic tales (baatrlgch tuuls), magic tales (sidtya tuuls), everyday stories and many others! Kalmyk Folklore is really rich.

And our the most important heritage is, of course, as many of you have probably guessed, the epos “Djangar“!

It reflects the whole life of the Kalmyks, our traditions and culture, mentality, our dreams and ideas of life, folklore, proverbs, sayings … In general, reading “Djangar” you can learn a lot about the Kalmyk people.

Scientists all over the world appreciate and marvel our epos because of its greatness and diversity. Not every nation has its epos and, by the way, its own written language. Admired by all…
