The capital of Greece is Athens.
Greece is located on the Balkan Peninsula and numerous islands. It has land borders with Albania in the northwest, North Macedonia and Bulgaria in the north, and Turkey in the northeast. It is washed by the Aegean (including the Icarian and Thracian Seas) in the east, the Ionian in the west, and the Mediterranean and Cretan Seas in the south.
Modern Greece is the heir of the culture of Ancient Greece, considered the cradle of Western civilization, the birthplace of democracy and Western philosophy, the basic principles of physical and mathematical sciences, theater and the modern Olympic Games.

From ancient times to the present, Greece has been one of the main tourist destinations in Europe. In 2018, Greece was visited by 33 million tourists, thus providing about 25% of the gross domestic product of the entire country.
Greece has always attracted foreign visitors with its rich history and tradition, but beach tourism has grown significantly in recent decades. The number of jobs provided by the tourism and related industries was 659,719 in 2006. This is 16% of all workers employed in the Greek economy.
In 2006, the Greek Ministry of Tourism invested more than $38 billion in the development of the leisure industry, an increase of $8 billion from 2002.
The wise and far-sighted government intends to encourage the development of winter, medical, pilgrimage, agricultural and other types of tourism in Greece, which will further increase the flow of tourists.
