Medvedev in gold temple of Kalmykia
Evening of March 1, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev visited the central khurul of Kalmykia “Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni” – the largest Buddhist temple in Russia and Europe.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who came to the temple accompanied by the Head of Kalmykia, Alexei Orlov, met the head of the monastic community and the Buddhist Republic of Kalmykia Telo Tulku Rinpoche.
Snowy Hudak, presented to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev – a sign of warm hospitality and respect for the honored guest. Today, December 7, 2010, the head of the Republic of Kalmykia Aleksey Orlov took part in the opening of the road along the street Arshanskaya in Elista.

On the 1st of December at 9 a.m. a solemn prayer “Thousand offerings to Lama Zonkava” is served in the central buddhist temple “Golden Abode of Buddha Shakyamuni”.
The first part of the prayer is to end at 11 a.m. The laymen are treated with Kalmykian tea, boortsog flat cakes and sweets by the monks of the central khurul.

Earlier this year, I visited one of the most improbable places on Earth, the little-known Republic of Kalmykia.
Located on the arid steppe south of Volgograd, Kalmykia is Europe’s only Buddhist republic.
It also bills itself as a Mecca for chess players. It is the headquarters of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), and a suburb has been built near the capital, Elista, expressly for holding tournaments and offering vacation homes to former champions. Head of Republic of Kalmykia, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov at the Umada Cup 2010 in Trinidad and Tobago
On August 15-16, Head of Republic of Kalmykia, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov visited Trinidad and Tobago where he participated in the opening ceremony of the 1st Caribbean Cup – UMADA Cup.
The idea to hold such tournament was born two months ago during FIDE President’s visit to Cuba at the closing ceremony of Capablanca Memorial.
